837 Tour Down Under Stage 4 Victor Harbor SA

G’day Erik, Oscar & Magnus

Today was reasonably slow for us. We went to the start of Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under in Unley Adelaide. We had a quick look around town. Mum bought a watch and I bought a paper (Oscar was in it from yesterdays Stage 3). We then looked at a couple of antique shops in Adelaide before wandering down to Victor Harbor to watch the stage finish. It was packed with a lot of cyclists who had just finished a local community ride. On the way home, we drove via Willunga Hill, where Stage 5 will finish tomorrow.

836 Tour Down Under Stage 3 Corkscrew Road Adelaide Hills SA

G’day Erik, Oscar & Magnus

Today we watched Stage 3 of the Tour Down Under, which explored the Adelaide Hills including the killer climb of Corkscrew Road. We started off watching an earlier part of the stage with another family with two young boys who love cycling as much as you guys. We then headed to Corkscrew Road and walked up the steep hill with many switchbacks. Oscar did an amazing job to walk 6km (return) all the way to the top. We saw Cadel Evans do a spectacular job of winning the stage and beating Simon Gerrans and Richie Porte to go into the lead of the race. Oscar even got photographed by the Adelaide Advertiser and will appear in tomorrow’s paper. Unfortunately, he also saw a cyclist (spectactor) have a massive post-front-tyre-puncture crash on the descent into a big gum tree. As soon as we got back to the Hahndorf Resort, you boys jumped straight on your own bikes.

835 Tour Down Under Stage 2 Stirling SA

G’day Erik, Oscar & Magnus

Today we went into Prospect Adelaide to watch the start of Stage 2 of Tour Down Under. We headed out of town to watch the riders do a couple of laps in the Adelaide Hills before driving to the pretty area of Stirling for the finish of the stage. Orica Green Edge rider Simon Gerrans held onto the Ochre (leaders) Jersey. We’re having a great time.

834 Tour Down Under Stage 1 Angaston SA

G’day Erik, Oscar & Magnus

Another “Bucket-List” item ticked off today: watch the Tour Down Under! We journeyed over to Angaston early, to set up shop right opposite the big screen. We wanted to watch the Stage 1 on TV and then the three laps of town at the finish. Unfortunately for us, they don’t turn on the big screen until live coverage starts on TV, so we had to wait until 1pm (over 2 hours)! In the end, it was okay as Orica Green Edge Simon Gerrans won Stage 1 of the Santos Tour Down Under in a spectacular sprint finish over Andre Griepel.

833 Explore Antique Shops & Adelaide Hills SA

G’day Erik, Oscar & Magnus

This morning we took a scenic drive through the Adelaide Hills looking for junk shops. Unfortunately, we didn’t find many and those we did find, were closed. We did find the World’s Largest Rocking Horse where we had lunch. After another scenic drive along Gorge Drive along the Chain of Ponds, we caught up with your good friend William. We’ve known his parents Jim & Sonja for years from the bi-annual FE-FC Holden Nationals. We even once bumped into them in Ceduna when we were both crossing the Nullabor (they were moving from Perth WA to Adelaide SA). We had a great time at a beautiful parkland area with a nice dam. Following some tips from Sonja, we explored a few junk shops in Adelaide and found a bunch of great stuff. We couldn’t buy much, just a few bakelite kitchen items, as all of the items of furniture which I loved and would have bought if only we could have been able to get them home!

832 Hahndorf Swap Meet & Peoples Choice Classic Adelaide SA

G’day Erik, Oscar & Magnus

Whilst everyone else slept in, Oscar and I headed into town for the Hahndorf Swap Meet. We picked up some great goodies including a miniature Winnebago badge of our FC Holden wagon and saw a magnet of our FC Holden ute (using my exact photo taken from the internet)! We then returned to collect Mum, Erik & Magnus for the Hahndorf Toy Fair. We picked up even more great goodies including lots of motorhome and caravan models. After a rest and pool visit in the afternoon, we watched some cricket (outside our van) then headed into Adelaide for the People’s Choice Classic cycling race. It’s a special 50km criterium, 25 laps of a 2km course around some pretty parklands. It’s also a warm-up for the Tour Down Under participants before the race starts properly on Tuesday. Tonight it was won by Marcel Kittel ahead of Andre Griepel, two German sprinters.

831 Tour Down Under Village Victoria Square Adelaide SA

G’day Erik, Oscar & Magnus

Today was yet another massive day for your little legs. We went into Victoria Square in the heart of Adelaide to explore the Santos Tour Down Under Village. This is where all the teams will be presented to the crowd tonight. We got there a few hours early, so we spent the day at the Adelaide Markets and walked along the Hindley Street and Rundle Mall shopping districts. I found one cool junk shop, a cool pushbike chopper shop and some retro appliances around town. Back at the Village, we explored the range of stalls, bought some more TDU merchandise and collected lots of free giveaways. We then watched on from the front of the crowd as cycling legends and commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwin presented the 20 teams participating in this years TDU. We saw the two Australian cycling teams as well as Tour de France legends such as Cadel Evans, Simon Gerrans, Jens Voigt, Henk Vogels, Frank Schleck, Andre Griepel and Marcel Kittell. We even saw the son of German sprinter Erik Zabel.
